Muscle or tendon injury? Or Pain?

PRP Injections could solve or dramatically improve muscle or tendon injury.

PRP is;

  1. Safe
  2. Effective
  3. Quick
  4. Inexpensive compared to many other methods

What is PRP ?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment is using patients’ blood platelets to stimulate healing in injured or degenerative tissue. Think of it like this, blood is essential for all parts of our body, blood contains nutrients that help repair damage.

When we injure ourselves, blood is pushed to that area to stimulate repairs. In some areas, such as your tendons, the blood flow is very poor. By simply extracting the blood, separating the nutrients, we can directly inject the area of damage. Therefore, completely by passing the areas that slow down the healing process. (Eliminating the middle man of delivery… so to speak)

What is the actual process to undertake PRP injections?

  • During your consultation the doctor will draw some of your blood.
  • This is then centrifuged to separate out the plasma layer and platelets.
  • The plasma and platelets are then injected into the damaged or painful area of your body.
  • The whole process should take approximately 30 minutes from the time of blood draw to the time of the actual injection.

Typically, we recommend a series of 3 injections for an injured area. These tend to be 2 weeks apart.

Speeding up the process of healing

This section typically applies if you suffer from chronic tendonitis.

Treating tendonitis can be tedious. It requires 5 steps to return the tendon back to normal function.

    1. PRP Injections
    2. Physio Therapy
    3. Rest
When the tendons have become severely inflamed, you need to stop and rest. Do not over stress the tendon, this can create a bigger problem.
    4. Use Hot NOT Cold
Keeping the tendons warm will allow increased blood flow, blood contains nutrients aid in recovery and it also contains natural anti-inflammatories which can reduce the pain. Using ice packs on tendonitis can often make the situation much worse since the cold will restrict blood flow to the tendon. They already have a poor blood supply, do not exacerbate this.
    5. Patient
In severe cases, it can take up to 2 years for tendonitis to resolve. If you are not patient and persistent you will not resolve the tendonitis.

The Science Behind Platelet Cells

Blood platelet cells contain granules rich in bioactive growth factors (GFs), proteins and cytokines. These together with other extracellular plasma proteins and cytokines, initiate and regulate tissue repair. This is a complex process involving multiple cells and cell signaling. Some of the important GFs include

  • Platelet-derived
  • Vascular endothelial
  • Transforming
  • Fibroblast
  • Epidermal
  • Hepatocyte, and
  • Insulin-like

When the skin sustains a cut, platelets release clotting factors to stop the bleeding while at the same time releasing GFs to repair the injured tissues. GFs stimulate healing whether it be making new capillaries, attracting mesenchymal stem cells to the injured area, repairing nerves or forming collagen to repair muscle, tendon, skin and chondral tissue.

Cost of  PRP- Injections

Consultation fee

This is only charged for your first consultation and the fee is $200

Injection Fee

Injections are $250 per needle that is required. Typically for a single area of damage you should only need 1 needle, sometimes 2.

Further injections will NOT attract another consultation fee.

There is no rebate through Medicare or private health insurance.
