Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that can remove fat from a specific part of the body. It’s a great way to improve the way you look by getting rid of stubborn pockets of fat that are almost impossible to get rid of with dieting and physical exercise.
Liposuction isn’t quite the same thing as weight loss; instead, it’s all about targeting certain areas, improving the look or your body and giving you back your confidence.
In this article we answer the questions we are most frequently asked about Liposuction, uncovering a few common myths along the way.
The most common areas for liposuction are arms, abdomen/stomach, upper and lower back (or the ‘muffin top’), buttocks, legs, thighs and chin/neck.
These are areas in which fat tends to build up, but they’re also relatively safe for liposuction when performed by an experienced surgeon.
Of course! Most people can comfortably have more than one area treated in the one session, preferring to have everything taken care of in the one session. However, you can also just have liposuction performed on a single area; it’s up to you.
Our liposuction treatments are performed with two types of : ‘local’ and ‘twilight’.
Local numbers the area where the fat is being removed. Twilight dulls pain throughout the whole body and keeps you calm. We’ll also provide you with medications, meaning that you won’t have a thing to worry about throughout the whole procedure.
The incision made during the procedure is very small (only around 1-2cm wide) and does not require stitches. Provided that patients avoid strenuous activity and lifting afterwards, minor discomfort should be the most you’ll feel in the days following liposuction.
Most patients who receive liposuction are able to go home around an hour after the procedure is finished.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions which may impact your recovery, we’ll discuss these prior to the procedure.
Most patients in non-physical employment can return to work after 3-4 days.
You can begin basic exercises such as light walking around five days after the procedure. Heavier exercises, such as weightlifting and contact sports, should be avoided until at least 6 weeks after your liposuction.
Once again, if you have any questions, they’ll all be covered in your personalised assessment beforehand by our qualified doctors.
Incisions made during the procedure are made with extreme care and only 1-2 cm across. We also try to perform them in a natural skin crease or fold to minimise scarring.
Even tiny potential scars are not long lasting, blending into your skin colour with time.
Exercise and diet are crucial for your health and wellbeing and will help you to lose weight, but there may still be stubborn areas of fat that remain. Liposuction is perfect for targeting these small areas.
Many people are genetically prone to storing fat in certain areas, even people who are otherwise totally fit and healthy, so this procedure can suit a wide variety of people, with all sorts of body types.
There’s no ‘single’ result, since every person’s body is different, and they store fat in all sorts of different places.
The results of liposuction can vary, but one important thing to note is that fat removal is measured in litres, not KG’s. Therefore, weight isn’t the main factor in deciding how you look after liposuction.
A person who loses 5kgs after exercising and eating well will look slightly slimmer overall. However, if you had 5L of fat removed from just your abdomen, you would look significantly skinnier because that area was specifically targeted.
Typical costs will vary from $2500 to $7500 for general small to large one off areas. This depends on body type and location.
Some patients will request Liposuction across multiple body parts, or have other forms of cosmetic surgery performed in one sitting, which can provide you with greater value than individual procedures.
