5 Things You Didn’t Know About Fat Transfer

Fat is a wonderful part of the body – as long as it is in the right areas! Think about it. How would your breasts look without fat tissue? What about your buttocks, or under your eyes? These are the areas where fat is vital.

Many women store excessive levels of fat in undesired part of the body, such as the thighs, abdomen or love handles. Fat Transfer takes this unappreciated fat and transplants it into an area where you would like some more shape and volume.

Who can benefit from fat transfer?

Women who feel that they have excessive fat in the stomach, thighs or lower back but wish they had greater volume and shape in their breast and/or buttocks. Surgeons can create beautiful leading lines which create a more fuller, firmer appearance.

Mothers who have breastfed multiple babies often experience sagging and a decrease in volume, both of which can be corrected.

There’s also another category of women who can benefit – those who have started to lose volume in their face and hands as part of the ageing process. This can leave some women with gaunt-looking cheeks and bony, thin hands. Fat transfer to the face can add volume to these areas.

How is the fat removed?

This process is known as Autologous Fat Transplantation. Fat is removed through Liposuction, where a very small incision is made to remove the fat. This incision is so small that stitches are not required. Patients are provided with local and medications.

How does the fat re-enter my body?

In the same procedure, the fat is re-injected into your body. Surgeons can use smaller incisions than injecting implants which reduces scarring. In most cases, these incisions can be cleverly hidden in a crease. Overall it’s a less invasive process with a quicker recovery time.

Why has fat transfer become popular?

Many patients like the idea of adding volume to certain areas of their body with their own fat.

Our patients tell us they chose Fat Transfer over silicone implants, as silicone is a foreign object to the body, and has been known to result in complications such as:

  • rejection of the implant
  • thick scarring
  • hardening of breast tissue, caused by scar tissue shrinking around the implant
  • rupture of silicone implants
  • creases or folds in silicon implants
  • infection
  • nerve damage to the nipples

How long do the results last?

Fluctuations in overall body weight can influence the amount of fat  present. An experienced surgeon will consider your individual circumstances and know how much fat to use to provide a suitable long term solution.
