Anti-wrinkle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax facial muscles and therefore reduce the appearance and progression of wrinkles. These injections can also be used for sweat reduction in axilla, hands and feet; and in reduce muscle spasm.

Anti-wrinkle injections are not for children, or people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Certain diseases and medications will preclude patients from using anti-wrinkle injections.

Anti-wrinkle injections should be used with other measures such as skin care products, sun protection, and dermal fillers to achieve the best result.

Patients will be evaluated with detailed history and examination prior to the treatment to determine suitability for the procedure.

After cleaning the area, anti-wrinkle injections are given with very small needles; usually no local or sedation is necessary. Distracting measures such as ice, and soft squeezing balls can be used. Inhaled sedation can be used for patients who are very anxious or sensitive.

Common side effects of the procedure include bruising, redness, tenderness, and asymmetrical muscle relaxation. Rarer side effects include immuno-resistance, and diffusion into neighbouring areas leading to undesirable effects.

Results will take 3 to 7 days to appear, and usually last around 3-4 months depending on dose given. There is some inter-personal variability. Patients can request partial muscle relaxation where there is some residual movement, or full muscle relaxation.

The patient is advised not to manipulate the area for the rest of the day, not to lie down for 4 hours, and to move the treated area to facilitate uptake of the muscle relaxant.
The patient is usually reviewed 2 weeks later.
