Anti-wrinkle injections are used to relax certain muscles in the face that cause wrinkles. Wrinkles and lines appear over time as the supportive components of our skin (elastin, collagen, etc.) degenerate with age. Anti-wrinkle injections have been developed to relax the muscles and contain a naturally occurring protein, which acts as a neuromodulator smoothing frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet, as well as potentially preventing the formation of new wrinkles.
A natural purified protein is injected into the muscle using a very fine needle which minimises discomfort and maximises accuracy. It is recommended that patients avoid alcohol for about a week before the anti-wrinkle treatment. In order to reduce bruising, patients should discontinue using aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before their treatment.
What You Need to Know About Anti-Wrinkle Injections
After receiving an anti-wrinkle treatment, you should notice a change after 1 or 2 weeks, and results can last anywhere between 3-4 months.
If at any time you choose to stop treatments, your muscles will return to normal and your wrinkles will return to how they were previously – they do not become worse.
Anti-wrinkle injections are most commonly used to treat:
This is a safe, effective non-surgical method of facial rejuvenation that takes only a few minutes and can be used in combination with dermal fillers to help treat stubborn wrinkles. Normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. However, you should avoid strenuous exercise or massaging the area for the first 4 hours after treatment. You can often achieve greater facial rejuvenation when you combine an anti-wrinkle treatment with dermal fillers.
There may be some redness (that can be covered with make-up if necessary) and slight swelling at the injection site. This usually disappears quickly within a few minutes. Other possible adverse events may be asymmetrical results and eyelid drooping. This may last for up to a month but is only temporary and will resolve naturally.
The cost of anti-wrinkle treatment depends on the number of units the doctor will use for your treatment. The number of units is determined on the area(s) being treated. The strength and depth of muscles are also taken into consideration. The price for anti-wrinkle injections is $16.50 per unit (inclusive of GST). Please note that there is no Medicare rebate on this treatment.
